Pre-Health Professions

The staff in the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) provide resources for students who are considering careers in health-related occupations. While most students are familiar with medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences, there are many other paths that lead to careers in health care settings. For example, studies in the allied health sciences include pharmacy, optometry, public health, podiatry, and physical, occupational and speech therapies. The OAA aims to expose all interested students to the variety of career opportunities available in the health professions arena, assist students in identification of and participation in appropriate developmental activities in preparation for postgraduate programs, and guide students during the application process. The following presentations are given to students each fall, and we encourage all interested students to attend.

  • Health Professions Advising Orientation: Early in the fall semester, the OAA provides an introduction to the health professions and ways to begin preparing early for potential health profession tracks. This presentation is particularly helpful for new, first-year students.
    • 2017’s session will be held on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 6:00 pm in Grand Hall in the Ley Student Center.
  • Open File Information Sessions for Applicants: In early November, the OAA provides detailed information to students who plan to apply to graduate schools of health professions in the upcoming cycle. We provide information on the Open File process, details regarding the Health Professions Advising Committee (HPAC), the application services and timelines, available resources, and much more. We strongly recommend that juniors and seniors planning to apply to medical or dental school attend one of these presentations.
  • Health Professions Fair: In late February, the OAA will host a number of medical, and other health professional schools from across the country. This is a wonderful opportunity for interested students to speak with admission counselors from a variety of institutions.

The Office of Academic Advising is pleased to announce that we have transitioned from the Health Professions listserv to our newsletter, which is designed to communicate updates and events for students interested in pursuing a career in the health professions. Current Rice students and alumni can request to be added to our newsletter mailing list by sending an email to
